Install Optical Pick-up OPU2 in CD Pro 2 (VAU 1254/XX)
Caution - Please review the following items before beginning.
- The mechanism of the CD Pro 2 module consists of delicate optical, mechanical and electrical components; therefore, proper handling measures must be taken.
- To avoid damage to the laser by electrostatic discharge (ESD), service technicians should be grounded during handling.
- Excessive mechanical forces on any part should be avoided.
- Storage in dusty, high temperature and high humidity environments should be avoided.
- Never touch the lens with your finger. Avoid soiling the lens with grease from the mechanical parts.
- Always work in a clean & safe environment.
- The optical pick-up unit (OPU) has been precision calibrated during manufacturing. Avoid touching this part. Do not disassemble. Do not readjust.
- Always use the proper tools when handling CD Pro 2.
- Fast heating up (e.g. by bringing the mechanism from a cold place into a warm and humid room) can result in moisture condensing on the lens, thus influencing the playability for a certain time. Before checking performance, the mechanism should stabilize to climatic conditions for at least 4 hours.
WARNING: INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION. AVOID DIRECT EXPOSURE TO THE LASER BEAM. THE LASER BEAM CAN DAMAGE THE HUMAN EYE.
1
Place the player on the bench top, lens facing down. When working with the player, be careful not to rest the module on the center hub. Best practice is to place the unit on a jig that allows for the center hub of the turntable to be raised off the bench top. Take care not to put pressure on the motor shaft; this can cause the turntable to be pushed in. The turntable will then “bottom out” on the casing resulting in friction and the motor will not spin.
Remove the 4 Torx no. 10 screws holding the PCB.
2
As you carefully lift the PCB, you will see two flex-foil cables attached to the PCB. The smaller foil controls the motor and the larger one controls the data. With a small flat screwdriver lift the latches on both sides of the connector, while holding the flex-foil cable. The flex-foils should remain slack. Slide each foil out of its connector. Do not pull on the foil cables with force. Put the PCB aside in a static-protected place.
3
With your finger rotate the worm gear attached to the sledge motor, moving it slowly along until the OPU moves about a ½ inch from the starting position. (Approximately into the middle of the sledge guidance shaft.) Do NOT force the OPU without rotating the worm gear, or you will cause damage to the gears. Note: Try not to remove all of the lubricant from the gear.
4
Using the T6 remove the screws holding the retaining clips, securing the sledge guidance shaft of the OPU on both sides. Use the T6 to remove the two screws holding the nylon sledge guidance plane and put them aside. There is no need to remove any additional screws, gears or any other parts from the player in order to remove the OPU.
5
Lift the sledge guidance shaft of the OPU on the left side first while lifting the top of the OPU from the upper sledge guidance shaft. As you remove the shaft from the holder on the left side, push the left side up to disengage the toothed black bar from the large gearwheel. Once you clear the gears, lift the shaft on the right side and remove the OPU with the shaft attached.
6
As you perform this process, familiarize yourself with the OPU. Pay close attention to the spring-loaded toothed black bar. During removal, take care not to disengage the small wire that acts as a spring. If this happens, carefully reinstall it with tweezers. You will need to compress this bar during the installation process. (In the case of the old OPU, you do not have to worry about damage, since this OPU will be discarded.)
7
Optional
CD Pro 2 and CD Pro 1 players are virtually identical mechanically. One exception is the clip holding the large gear wheel. Some experienced jukebox operators believe that this clip applies unnecessary pressure on the large gear wheel and can cause the sledge motor to work harder during lateral movement of the OPU. A suggested modification is to lift the clip to relieve the pressure on the gear wheel.
Note: Philips has not endorsed this modification, nor does Enco perform it as a part of our refurbishment process.
8
Remove the new OPU2 from the box.
Important: You will be reusing the original guidance shaft from the old OPU. Remove one of the clear rubber grommets from the shaft of the old OPU and slide the shaft out. Slide it into the guide holes of the new OPU2 and reinstall the rubber grommet. Apply lubricant to the shaft after it is reinserted onto the new OPU2.
9
CAUTION: This is the most critical step of the repair.
Carefully reinstall the new OPU2 the same way as the old one was removed in step 5 (of course in reverse order). Slide the right side of the sledge guidance shaft into the shaft slot. Make sure the toothed black bar on the OPU2 goes under the large gearwheel. Than apply light pressure and slide the left side into the shaft slot. Touch the shaft as little as possible; it has all the needed lubrication. If you do need to reapply lubrication, use a small amount.
10
Reassemble the shaft holders. Reassemble the nylon sledge guidance plane. Tweezers work best in this process. Do not rotate the OPU2 back to the “home” position. This will happen automatically upon the first power-up.
11
Remove the ESD clip from the OPU2 flex-foil cable and discard. Take the PCB and reinsert the flex foil cables into their connectors. Insert them all the way down and push the locks down on both sides to secure the cables. Mount the PCB back to the module and reinstall the 4 No. 10 torx screws.
12
If the module came out of a jukebox, install in into the jukebox and test it. The best way to test in a jukebox is to play the first and last track on several CDs. For hifi units, reinstall and play tracks from a number of CDs.
If your jukebox or hifi transport works, the repair has been a success.
